Rainbow Mountain vs Humantay Lake

Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake? The climb, the altitude, the fees and the crowds compared, so you can pick the right pre-dawn day trip from Cusco.

Updated October 2026

The short answer: go to Rainbow Mountain if the striped ridge is what you came to Peru to see and you have had two or three days in Cusco; go to Humantay Lake if you would rather walk to a glacier lake and finish about 800 m lower. Both are pre-dawn day trips with breakfast and lunch for about the same price, both rate 4.8 out of 5, and both are hard work. The difference is what is waiting at the top, and how high the top is.

Times and fees are from the two featured listings, checked October 2026; the walking distances are measured along the paths, and the heights are those the operators give for each walk.

Which climb is harder?

They are hard in different ways. Humantay is steeper: the path from Soraypampa climbs without a break, and reviewers describe a tough, steep incline that is manageable at your own pace. Rainbow Mountain is higher: the trail is longer and gentler in places, but it starts at about 4,850 m and finishes near 5,000 m, where the air holds noticeably less oxygen and every step costs more. People who struggle with altitude tend to find Rainbow Mountain the harder day; people who struggle with steep ground tend to say the opposite.

Horses are available on both trails, paid in cash to local handlers, and on both you will still walk some of the way.

Crowds and timing

Both viewpoints fill up as the morning goes on. That is why both tours leave Cusco at 3:30 to 4:00 am, and why reviewers on both say the early start was worth it. Rainbow Mountain is the busier of the two, with stalls and many groups at the top by mid-morning; at Humantay the lake shore gets crowded later in the morning too. If crowds would spoil your day, the earliest start you can find matters more than which of the two you choose.

Season

Both are best in the dry season, May to October. From November to April expect rain, cloud and mud; snow can hide Rainbow Mountain’s bands and block its access roads, while the lake keeps its colour on a cloudy day but loses the glacier view.

Can you do both?

Yes, on separate days, and many people do: they leave Cusco in opposite directions, so no single day covers both. Put a rest day or a gentle Sacred Valley day between them, do the lower one, Humantay, first, and leave Rainbow Mountain for when you have had the most time at altitude. The altitude guide explains why the order matters. If neither climb appeals, Palccoyo gives you coloured ridges for a 40-minute walk.
