Rainbow Mountain Altitude: How High, and How to Get Ready

Rainbow Mountain's ridge is about 5,200 m, 1,800 m above Cusco. How altitude sickness shows up, how many days to acclimatise first, and the easier options.

Updated October 2026

The short answer: the striped ridge of Vinicunca rises to about 5,200 m (17,060 ft), and the viewpoint where the tours stop is at about 5,000 m, roughly 1,600 m above Cusco. The trail starts at about 4,850 m, so the walk itself climbs only about 150 m; what makes it hard is the height you start at. Give yourself at least two or three days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before you go, and the day is hard but fine for most people. Go on your first day off the plane, and it is a gamble.

At 5,000 m the air pressure is only about half of what it is at sea level, so each breath carries roughly half the oxygen. That is why a short, gentle-looking trail leaves fit people gasping, and why fitness does not protect you from altitude sickness.

What altitude sickness feels like

Acute mountain sickness, called soroche in Peru, usually starts 2 to 12 hours after you arrive somewhere high. The main symptom is a headache, often with nausea, dizziness, tiredness and no appetite. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) counts any unacclimatised traveller sleeping above about 2,500 m as at risk, and lists Cusco, at about 3,350 to 3,400 m, among the destinations where it matters.

Two rarer conditions are emergencies. Fluid on the lungs (HAPE) starts with chest congestion, a cough and unusual breathlessness on exertion; swelling of the brain (HACE) shows as confusion, clumsiness, stumbling or drowsiness. Either one means going down at once and getting medical help. On the trail, the CDC’s advice for ordinary mountain sickness applies too: if symptoms get worse despite rest, descend; going down even 300 m usually helps.

How to prepare, day by day

  1. Day 1, arrival. Take it slowly. The CDC suggests travellers flying into Cusco can sleep lower for a night or two, which in practice means the Sacred Valley. Avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours.
  2. Day 2, something low. A Sacred Valley day or the Moray and Maras half day: little walking, mostly at or below Cusco’s height.
  3. Day 3, Rainbow Mountain at the earliest. The day trips recommend at least two days in Cusco first, and they carry emergency oxygen on the trail. A spare day in between, walking Cusco’s old town at an easy pace (below), makes day four an easier climb still.

If you are doing both Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake, do Humantay first: it tops out about 800 m lower. Ask a doctor before the trip about acetazolamide, the medicine the CDC recommends for travellers at higher risk; it is started the day before you go up, and it is a prescription decision, not something to buy on the day. You will be offered coca tea all over Cusco; it is part of local life, and no substitute for time at altitude.

A free day in Cusco: walk the old town

A spare day in Cusco is a good day for a free walking tour of the historic centre: the guides meet in the old town, booking costs nothing and you pay the guide what you think the walk was worth. Where to sleep while you acclimatise

The Rainbow Mountain day trips collect you in Cusco’s historic centre between 3:00 and 4:00 am, so for the night before, stay within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas. For your first night or two, consider sleeping lower in the Sacred Valley, around Urubamba, then moving up to Cusco.

If you are worried about the altitude

You do not have to choose between Vinicunca and nothing:

  • Palccoyo, the other rainbow mountain, at about 4,900 m: a 30 to 40 minute walk instead of an hour and a half.
  • A horse on the Vinicunca trail, rented from local families for 70 to 100 soles in cash; the last part is still on foot.
  • An ATV day, where a quad covers the approach.

Going on to Lake Titicaca?

Puno, on the shore of Lake Titicaca, sits higher than Cusco, at about 3,800 m, so the days you spend in Cusco count towards that leg too. lake-titicaca-tour.com covers the islands and the road from Cusco to Puno.
