"Most incredible day out hiking up to Humantay Lake! The hike up is intense but so worth it, they give out free wooden hiking poles (one per person) or you can hire the proper ones. The drive was great, food good and guide was fantastic, he spoke English really well and we got lots of interesting facts. Highly recommend!"

Humantay Lake: The Climb, the Fee and the Day
What the two-hour walk is like at 4,200 m, what it costs on top of the tour, and who should pick Rainbow Mountain instead.

Humantay is the other great day out from Cusco: a lake the colour of a swimming pool, sitting at about 4,200 m in a bowl under the glaciers of Humantay peak, with Salkantay, the highest peak of the Vilcabamba range, standing behind it. Like Rainbow Mountain it is a pre-dawn start and a hard walk. Unlike Rainbow Mountain, the hard part is the slope, not the height.
The day, hour by hour
The most-reviewed day trip, featured above, collects you in Cusco’s historic centre between 3:30 and 4:00 am. After two hours on the road west you stop in Mollepata for breakfast and a chance to buy water and snacks. Another hour up a mountain road takes you to Soraypampa, a high grassy plateau with Salkantay and Humantay above it, where the walk starts.
From Soraypampa it is about 2 km of path and two hours up to the lake, then an hour back down. The shore gets busy as the morning goes on, which is why the start is so early. The group has about half an hour at the lake, with an optional short climb above the lake for the view down onto the water. Lunch is a buffet back in Mollepata, and you are dropped near the Plaza de Armas between 5:00 and 6:00 pm.
How hard is the climb?
The trail is steep from the start and does not let up, and it ends at about 4,200 m, some 800 m above Cusco. Most reasonably fit visitors manage it in the two hours the tours allow, stopping often. The guides keep the groups small and let people climb at their own pace. If you doubt your legs or your lungs, local handlers at Soraypampa rent horses for the way up: 80 to 100 soles one way in the October 2026 listings, paid in cash. Even with a horse you will walk part of the way.
Do not do Humantay in your first two days in the region. Cusco itself is at about 3,400 m; give your body two or three days there or in the lower Sacred Valley first. The altitude guide explains what to watch for.

What it costs on top of the tour
The tour price covers transport, the guide, breakfast and lunch. You pay these in cash, in soles, on the day:
| Extra | Cost (October 2026) | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Humantay Lake entrance | 20 soles (10 for Peruvians) | Mollepata, on the way up |
| Horse, uphill | 80 to 100 soles | Soraypampa |
| Tips | your choice | guide and driver |
The lower-priced Humantay day trip follows the same route and timing; the difference is the operator, the group and a few dollars.
Humantay or Rainbow Mountain?
Both are long pre-dawn days at similar prices, and many visitors only have energy for one. Pick Humantay for a glacier lake and a lower high point; pick Rainbow Mountain for the striped ridge in the photos, at about 5,000 m. The side-by-side comparison goes through the climb, the crowds and the season for each.
When to go
The dry season, May to October, brings the clearest water and the best chance of seeing the glaciers. From November to April expect rain, cloud and mud on the path. It is cold at the lake in every month: bring a warm layer, a hat, gloves and a rain shell, sunglasses and sunscreen. The tours lend a wooden walking stick and carry emergency oxygen; large bags are not allowed on the van.
Before or after the Sacred Valley
If you are planning several days around Cusco, a gentle day in the Sacred Valley at a lower altitude makes a good warm-up before Humantay. Ready to book? Compare the options or check live availability for the featured day trip.

Humantay Lake Tour: FAQ
The climb, the altitude, the fee and the day from Cusco. Fees and prices checked October 2026.
Harder than its length suggests. The walk from Soraypampa to the lake is only about 2 km of path but takes around two hours up, all of it steep, and it ends at about 4,200 m. Coming down takes about an hour. The guides let small groups set their own pace, and horses can be hired for the climb if you need one. Do it after two or three days in Cusco, not on your first.
The lake sits at about 4,200 m, roughly 800 m above Cusco, below the glaciers of Humantay peak (about 5,250 m), with Salkantay rising behind it. That is about 800 m lower than the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, at about 5,000 m, which is why many people find Humantay the easier of the two at the top, if not on the climb.
20 soles for foreign visitors and 10 for Peruvians, paid in cash in Mollepata on the way up (October 2026 listings). It is not included in the tour price, so carry small notes in soles for the fee and for snacks and water on the road.
By road west to Mollepata, about two hours from Cusco, where the tours stop for breakfast, then another hour up a mountain road to Soraypampa, where the walk starts. Almost everyone goes on an organised day trip, which collects you in the historic centre between 3:30 and 4:00 am and brings you back between 5:00 and 6:00 pm.
Yes, local handlers rent horses at Soraypampa for the climb, paid in cash and arranged separately from the tour: 80 to 100 soles one way uphill in the October 2026 listings. The trail is steep, and even with a horse you will walk part of the way.
Yes. Anyone sleeping above about 2,500 m without acclimatising is at risk, and Cusco is already about 3,400 m. Spend at least two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first, drink water, skip alcohol for the first 48 hours, and turn back if a headache gets worse on the climb. The altitude guide covers the details.
The dry season, May to October, gives the clearest blue-green water and glacier views; from November to April expect rain, cloud and mud on the trail. Mornings are clearest in any season, which is why the tours start so early. It is cold at the lake all year, so bring a warm layer, a hat and gloves.
Humantay if you want a glacier lake and a lower high point; Rainbow Mountain if you want the striped ridge in the photos and can manage about 5,000 m. Both are long pre-dawn day trips at similar prices. The side-by-side guide weighs them up.
Walking shoes with grip, warm and rain layers, a hat, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen, water and snacks, and cash in soles for the entrance fee and any horse. The tours lend a wooden walking stick and carry emergency oxygen. Large bags are not allowed on the van.
On both Humantay day trips on this page, yes: breakfast and lunch are in the price. The most-reviewed one serves breakfast in Mollepata on the way out and a buffet lunch there on the way back, with a vegetarian option. Tips are extra.
