"Overall brilliant experience! If able, make sure you do the red valley as well, as personally this was better than the rainbow mountain…. Although the rainbow mountain was just as beautiful."

How Your Rainbow Mountain Tour Works
From a pre-dawn Cusco pickup to the summit of the Andes and back.
Pre-Dawn Pickup in Cusco
Your guide collects you from your Cusco hotel around 4 AM for the roughly 3-hour drive toward the trailhead, with breakfast usually included en route.
Hike (or Ride) to the Viewpoint
From the trailhead it's about 1.5–2 hours uphill to the Vinicunca viewpoint — or a much gentler walk at Palccoyo. Horses and ATV options exist if you'd rather not hike the whole way.
The Striped Summit (and Red Valley)
Reach the famous colored ridge at 5,200m for photos. Many tours offer the quieter Red Valley nearby as an optional add-on if your altitude is holding up.
Lunch & Return to Cusco
Walk back down, enjoy an included lunch, and ride back to Cusco. It's a long day — usually 11–14 hours door to door — so you'll be back by late afternoon or evening.

Before You Book
Which Rainbow Mountain Tour Should You Book?
Vinicunca vs Palccoyo, hiking vs ATV, budget vs premium, plus the altitude and costs nobody warns you about — an honest planning guide.

Search “rainbow mountain tour” and Cusco’s agencies throw a hundred near-identical day trips at you. Almost all of them go to the same place in almost the same way — so the choices that actually change your day are simpler than they look: which rainbow mountain, how you get to the top, and whether your body is ready for the altitude. Here’s how to decide.
Vinicunca vs Palccoyo: which rainbow mountain?
There are two colored mountains sold as “Rainbow Mountain,” and they’re very different days out.
- Vinicunca is the famous one — a single striped ridge at 5,200 m (17,060 ft), about a 3-hour drive from Cusco, then a 3–4 km uphill hike (1.5–2 hours each way) to the viewpoint. It’s busier, higher, harder, and the image you’ve seen on Instagram.
- Palccoyo is the easier alternative — a bit farther out (~120–125 km, 3.5–4 hours), but its viewpoint sits lower (~4,900 m) and the walk is short and gentle (30–60 minutes, almost flat). It also gives you three colored ridges plus a “stone forest” of rock spires, and a fraction of the crowds.
Rule of thumb: book Vinicunca if you’re reasonably fit, want the iconic shot, and have acclimatized; choose Palccoyo if you’re traveling with kids or older relatives, you’re short on acclimatization, or you simply don’t want a hard climb at altitude.
How to reach the top: hike, horse, or ATV
On the standard Vinicunca tour you hike the final climb. If that worries you, you have two options most listings bury:
- Horseback — local handlers offer horses for most of the ascent (paid separately, in cash); you still walk the last steep stretch.
- ATV / quad bike — a quad covers the long approach so you ride most of the way up. If you’d rather skip the hike almost entirely, see our dedicated guide at rainbow-mountain-tour-atv.com — note that even the ATV tours end with a short final walk to the viewpoint.
For most people, the guided hiking day trip featured here is the simplest and cheapest way to do it — and the tours below span budget, premium and the ATV route so you can match it to your legs.
What it really costs (mind the entrance fees)
The eye-catching from-$19 prices are real, but they’re not the whole bill. The Vinicunca site entrance fee (~25–30 soles) is usually paid in cash on the day and not included in the tour price. Palccoyo has its own smaller fee (~15 soles), and the optional Red Valley add-on is another ~20–30 soles. Budget tours also tend to mean bigger groups and a more rushed schedule; the premium options buy smaller groups, better food and more time. Check the FAQ for the full cost breakdown.
Altitude is the real challenge — not the walk
The single biggest mistake is doing Rainbow Mountain too early in your trip. Cusco sits at ~3,400 m, and Vinicunca is nearly 1,800 m higher again. Spend at least two or three days acclimatizing in Cusco before you go, drink lots of water, ease off alcohol, and consider coca tea or altitude medication. Altitude sickness (soroche) doesn’t care how fit you are — and it’s why so many people find even the short walks brutal up there.
Red Valley: the add-on worth considering
Next to Vinicunca lies the Red Valley (Valle Rojo) — a deep-red valley that’s far quieter than the main viewpoint. Many tours offer it as an optional extra (a short additional walk and a small cash fee). If your altitude is holding up, it’s one of the best parts of the day; if you’re already struggling, skip it without guilt.
When to go, and what the colors are
Aim for the dry season, roughly May to October (clearest May–September); the rainy months November to March bring mud, cloud and snow that can hide the colors. Dawn at the viewpoint can be near or below freezing year-round, so dress in layers. And the stripes aren’t paint — they’re bands of weathered minerals (iron oxide for the reds, other minerals for the golds and greens) exposed over millions of years.
One more thing travelers always ask: Rainbow Mountain is not near Machu Picchu — they’re about 350 km apart in opposite directions and can’t be combined in a single day. Plan them separately.

What Travelers Say
"It was a very nice experience. We got lucky with the weather, so we could see the beautiful mountain very clearly. Meals were nice too. Everything very well planned and organized."
"Great value and great experience. It was worth getting up really early to beat the crowd. We also had really great weather. I rented the hiking sticks and I’m glad I did. In December, there are some sections can be muddy or slick. Be prepared for the altitude, it can feel intense. I loved the trip and would definitely recommend. Thank you for an awesome day!"

"Amazing trip. A delicious breakfast followed by a beautiful drive up a canyon dirt road. The hike to the viewpoint was great followed by a other amazing hike to red valley. The whole valley is breathtaking. Our guide Kevin did a great job taking care of everyone and answering all of our questions. a delicious buffet lunch followed our hike. great time. Don't miss it."

"It’s a very good experience, well organised and we had a great guide, Kevin, and a cautious driver, renato. The task is more intense that I expected, for the altitude and the stiffness of the ground, but it is possible. The reward is the beautiful mountains. Only a bit too long the day in general, maybe I would skip one of the meals with a to go breakfast. You wake up very early in the morning and the task is tiring."

Rainbow Mountain Tours from Cusco — FAQ
Costs, altitude, Vinicunca vs Palccoyo, and everything else to know before you book.
Budget group day trips to Vinicunca start around $19 to $23 per person, premium small-group tours run $39 and up, the easier Palccoyo is about $41, and the by-ATV route is around $66. Most include round-trip Cusco transport, breakfast and lunch, and a guide. Be aware the site entrance fee is usually extra and paid in cash on the day.
The Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain entrance fee is roughly 25 to 30 Peruvian soles and is normally NOT included in the tour price — you pay it in cash on the day. Palccoyo has its own smaller fee (around 15 soles), and the optional Red Valley add-on is another 20 to 30 soles. Bring enough cash in soles for entrance fees and any extras.
Visit Vinicunca for the famous single striped ridge if you're reasonably fit and acclimatized — it's higher (5,200 m) and involves a 1.5 to 2 hour uphill hike each way. Choose Palccoyo if you want an easier day: it's lower (~4,900 m) with a short, gentle 30 to 60 minute walk, has three colored ridges plus a stone forest, and far fewer crowds. Palccoyo is the better pick for families and older travelers.
The Vinicunca hike is short in distance (3 to 4 km each way) but genuinely tough because of the altitude — you finish at 5,200 metres, where even gentle climbing leaves you breathless. Take it slowly. If you're worried, you can hire a horse for much of the climb, take the ATV route, or choose the much easier Palccoyo instead.
Yes — this is the most important tip. Cusco sits at about 3,400 m and Rainbow Mountain is nearly 1,800 m higher. Spend at least two to three days in Cusco before your tour to reduce the risk of altitude sickness (soroche). Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol the night before, and consider coca tea or altitude medication. Fitness doesn't protect you from altitude.
Vinicunca is roughly a 3-hour drive from Cusco (around 100 to 140 km depending on the route, usually via Cusipata). Palccoyo is a bit farther, about 120 to 125 km and 3.5 to 4 hours. Tours include round-trip transport with a very early pickup, typically around 4 AM, to beat the crowds and the afternoon clouds.
Expect a long day — roughly 11 to 14 hours door to door from Cusco, including the pre-dawn pickup, the drive each way, the hike, time at the viewpoint, and lunch. Palccoyo can be slightly shorter thanks to the easier walk. You'll usually be back in Cusco by late afternoon or early evening.
The Red Valley (Valle Rojo) is a deep-red valley right beside Vinicunca, much quieter than the main viewpoint. Many tours offer it as an optional add-on with a short extra walk and a small cash fee (around 20 to 30 soles). If your altitude is holding up it's one of the highlights of the day; if you're struggling to breathe at the summit, it's fine to skip.
No. Rainbow Mountain and Machu Picchu are about 350 km apart in opposite directions from Cusco, and each is a full day on its own. Plan them as separate trips, ideally with acclimatization time in Cusco before tackling Rainbow Mountain's high altitude.
The dry season, roughly May to October (clearest May to September), gives the best chance of vivid colors under blue sky. The rainy season from November to March brings mud, cloud and occasional snow that can hide the stripes. Whatever the month, start early and dress in warm layers — dawn at the viewpoint is often near or below freezing.
Wear warm layers you can shed (hat and gloves for the cold morning), closed shoes with good grip, sunglasses and strong sunscreen for the intense high-altitude sun. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and cash in soles for entrance fees and extras. A walking pole helps on the climb. Pack light — you carry everything yourself.
For most travelers, yes. The top-rated Vinicunca day trip holds a 4.8 out of 5 rating from more than 5,600 travelers, and the scenery genuinely lives up to the photos. The key to enjoying it is acclimatizing properly and choosing the version — classic hike, easier Palccoyo, or by ATV — that matches your fitness. Read the traveler reviews on this page to judge for yourself.
